Safety & privacy

Hunter safety, without tracking anybody.

Back by Dark shares a member’s location with their club only between checking in to a stand and checking out of it. That window is enforced by the server, not by a setting.

Back by Dark's Who's Out screen, visible only to members of the same club: Wade Burton is live in Creek Box Blind, in since 1:03 PM.

When location is shared

A start, an end, and nothing either side.

  1. Sharing off

    Before you check in

Nothing is shared. The app can be open on the map and your club still cannot see where you are.

  2. Sharing on

    You scan the stand’s tag

Check-in opens. From this moment your position is shared with the active members of your club.

  3. Sharing on

    While you hunt

You appear on Who’s Out with your stand and the time you went in. Nobody outside your club can see it.

  4. Sharing off

    You check out

Sharing stops in the same request. Nothing is recorded on the walk out or the drive home.

How that is enforced: a stored position has to belong to an open check-in, and the server refuses a position from anyone who is not checked in. There is no switch a club can flip to see members outside a hunt.

If someone does not come back

Overdue, escalated automatically.

A member’s expected check-out is the end of their stand booking. If that time passes, Back by Dark escalates in three steps without anybody having to notice first.

  1. +30 min

    We ask you

Thirty minutes past your expected check-out, Back by Dark sends you a notification asking whether you are still out. Most of the time you are dragging a deer.

  2. +45 min

    Managers see a flag

At forty-five minutes you are flagged red on Who’s Out, and the club’s managers are alerted.

  3. +60 min

    Your emergency contact is released

At an hour, the emergency contact you gave is shown to your club. Before that, the club can see only that you provided one.

Escalation never stops a late member from checking out. The moment they do, it ends.

What Back by Dark does not do

The short list of things we will not do.

  • No tracking outside a hunt

No location before check-in, after check-out, or while the app is closed.

  • No advertising

There are no ads in Back by Dark, and none are planned.

  • No selling data

Member data, including location, is never sold or shared with advertisers.

  • No sharing across clubs

A club you hunt with cannot see anything you gave a different club — including your emergency contact.
