Back by Dark is used by hunting clubs to book stands, check in and out of them, and know who is still on the property. This page says what that involves.
Location — the short version
Your location is shared only between checking in and checking out. Not before. Not after. Not when the app is closed and you are driving home.
This is enforced in the database, not by policy: a location record cannot exist without an open session attached to it, and the server refuses to store one from anybody who is not currently checked in. Checking out stops the sharing in the same request.
What we collect
- Your name and email — so the club knows who booked a stand and you can sign in.
- Your password — stored only as a bcrypt hash. We cannot read it, and neither can anyone with a copy of the database.
- Which stand you booked, and when you checked in and out — this is the point of the product.
- Your location, while checked in — so the club can find you if you do not come out. See above.
- Sightings and stand problems you report — shared with your club.
- Your emergency contact, if you give one — see below — this is the most restricted thing we hold.
Who can see your location
Other active members of the same club, while you are checked in. Nobody outside your club, ever. We do not sell it, share it with advertisers, or use it to build a profile of you. There is no advertising in Back by Dark at all.
Your emergency contact
If you give one, it is stored against your membership of a specific club — so a club you hunt with cannot see a contact you gave to a different club.
Your club cannot see it until you are an hour past your expected check-out time. Before that, the club can see only that you have provided one. This is enforced in the query that builds the screen, not by asking people not to look.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from the Account screen in the app or the web console. It deletes, it does not deactivate.
Your sign-in, your club memberships, your check-in history and all of your location history are removed. Sightings and stand reports you filed stay with the club as its record of its own property, with your name removed from them. A club that has no other members is deleted along with your account.
How long we keep things
Location records are kept for the season and then deleted. Everything else stays until you delete your account or your club removes you.
Children
Clubs may give a youth member their own account. A youth account works the same way as any other and is subject to this page. Back by Dark is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their information without a parent or guardian setting up the account.
